SCI Foundation Gives Back

Through SCI Foundation’s countless humanitarian programs, SCI chapters and individual members demonstrate the highest levels of philanthropy by directly reaching out to people in need throughout the world. Our programs allow various opportunities for hunters to give back to the communities in which they hunt and live.

We provide millions of meals to the hungry through our Sportsmen Against Hunger program, which gives harvested game meat and fish to shelters, soup kitchens and food banks across the United States. Our Sensory Safaris allow the visually impaired to experience nature and wildlife through the sensation of touch. Participants can experience various wildlife and habitat displays due to generous donations of wildlife mounts, pelts, antlers and horns. Additionally, SCI Foundation works to provide relief and offer supplies to impoverished communities around the world through our SafariCare or Blue Bag program.

The Blue Bag Program gives bags filled with medical, educational, hygiene, other relief supplies, clothing, and toys to local communities. The bags are taken to remote areas of the world by hunters. The supplies are delivered directly to villages, clinics, schools and orphanages for villagers, doctors, teachers and caregivers to utilize. Since 2005, participants in this program have reported taking 1,331 blue bags overseas. Shipping and filling these bags would cost hundreds of dollars apiece. However, they are filled by SCI chapters or individual members.

Recently, SCI members Bob and Taryn Hanna traveled to hunt in South Africa and were adamant about bringing a Blue Bag. Through SafariCare, they were sent an empty blue duffel bag, as well as one filled with supplies provided by the Hunter Legacy Fund. These supplies included medical and school supplies, personal care items and more. During their trip, they traveled to the Bakgalaka primary school in the Village of Shongoane to deliver the supplies and recounted that the teachers were elated to see the supplies and so thankful for SCI Foundation’s generosity.

“Members, we pride ourselves as being “First for Hunters,” and “First for Wildlife.” I recommend that you look into adding this project to your safari experience, so that we can also say that we are “First for Caring,” – Bob and Taryn Hanna
